After an exhausting 72-hour period, voting for the Lord’s Council has concluded with the votes being tallied up over night. The results were officially announced by the High Lord Chancellor after consultation with neutral third parties.

Liberals have made historic gains in tonight’s election results, with Councillor-elect tvman999’s support base only being held up by older and traditionally conservative voters.

Councillors-elect jamietech and Zyra_Bot managed to successfully energise their young base to secure a comfortable lead, giving them an invaluable mandate to enact their policies and to influence the decisions of the Chancellor and his vice counterpart.

A clear mandate for jamietech, who led the vote

Every single ballot cast included jamietech as one of their three choices, proving that her policies and confidence won against any remaining republican sentiment, much to the dismay of her opponents.

“I want to begin by thanking my opponents, Zyra_Bot, tvman999, IcyPenguin79 and InvictusX,” jamietech said to reporters, moments after being informed of her victory.

“Each of them are great politicians and during the campaign have been friendly, good-natured and founts of brilliant ideas.”

When journalists questioned what issues the councillor-elect would combat first, jamietech said “no Gabon government has ever faced such a daunting set of circumstances — ranging from the crippling debt facing the government, the threat of starvation on the entire country and the pressing issues surrounding foreign relations and our citizens’ desires for more.”

“Well, I look at you this morning and I ask myself: do you look daunted? Do you feel daunted? I don’t think you look remotely daunted to me. I think we know we can do it and the people of this country are trusting us to do it and we know that we will do it.”

Exit polls could not predict a close loss

The feeling was the opposite of defiant in the campaign headquarters of IcyPenguin, finishing a single vote behind competitor tvman999.

Once a steady second in polling in the run up to the election, this campaign is a stark and harsh reminder that exit polls are not reliable. Campaign posters were already being removed and binned when we arrived, with some staffers advising they were laid off in the early hours of last night as the results came in.

When approached for comment a campaign spokesperson told reporters “Icypenguin is a brilliant, talented individual who hopefully, in time, the Gabonese people will open up their arms for in future elections. We want to assure our supporters that this is not the end of our campaign and we shall continue to fight to ensure those elected stick to their promises.”

Gabon moving in a new direction

This election marks a change in direction for Gabon. Though the citizens may have returned conservative tvman999 to his seat, the overwhelming support of the liberally-minded and confident elected councillors jamietech and Zyra_Bot is the real takeaway from this general election.

With electoral push back towards the isolationist policies of the Lord High Chancellor, will these results force concessions to be made?

The Gazette will continue to keep Gaboners updated as political developments occur.
