In the early hours of this morning, the Grand Prince called an emergency meeting of the Assembly. Sources inform the Gazette that this was due to the Grand Prince’s dissatisfaction with multiple Varkonian senators being charged with criminal offences in Mount Augusta, tarnishing the name of Varkonia.

The Gazette understands that the Grand Prince believed the issue so important that government officials and staff were practically dragged from their beds to attend the meeting in Balmoral.

In the meeting, the Grand Prince sought for Gabon to exercise its human right to self determination by declaring independence from Varkonia.

After a number of votes were called, the question of leaving Varkonia was resolved in the negative.

Gabon originally became part of the territory of Varkonia in July 2018, with the ratification by both countries’ governments of the Treaty Effecting a Transition of Government for the Principality of Gabon through Cession of Lands to the Grand Duchy of Varkonia. This saw Gabon cease to be a Principality and instead become a Province.

As part of the deal, the then Her Majesty The Queen lost her claim to the throne, her royal House was dissolved and she became the Grand Prince. Her Majesty’s Privy Council was also dissolved and replaced with the Assembly of the Province of Gabon.

Although Gabon became a protectorate of Varkonia, it retained significant independence under the deal. Varkonia does not have the power to interfere with Gabonian politics unless its decisions infringed upon peace and good government in Varkonia. Varkonian laws do not apply in Gabon unless Varkonia is granted the power to make law on a certain topic for Gabon. Additionally, Varkonian courts are not competent to hear matters relating to the law of Gabon.

These arrangements remain on force despite the Grand Prince’s attempts to revoke them. We are informed by reliable government sources that the Grand Prince is seriously unhappy with the outcome. How she will respond is yet to be seen.
